SPOT
Wakarimu Noshappu Cold Current Aquarium
Located near the Wakkanai Lighthouse, this aquarium was opened in July 1968 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the opening of Wakkanai, the 90th anniversary of the foundation of Wakkanai City, and the 20th anniversary of its municipal organization. It is the 100th aquarium in Japan, and has about 1,500 exhibits of 100 species.
In the 90-ton migration tank, visitors can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of the "fantastic fish" Itou, as well as hokke (a species of fish found in the northern part of Japan), soi (a species of fish found in the northern part of Japan), and flounder.
The aquarium has also succeeded in breeding and exhibiting new fish, such as the "idol of the northern seas," the fusiliers. In addition, a seal pond and a penguin pond have also been set up, where visitors can meet adorable largha seals, Humboldt penguins, and others.
The nickname "Wakkarimu" was announced in July, Heisei 30 (2018).
