SPOT
Wakkanai City Science Museum for Youth
Opened on July 28, 1974 (Showa 49), total area of 2,031 square meters (including annex). The partially three-story facility is adjacent to the Noshappu Cold Current Aquarium.
Inside the facility is a planetarium, the oldest currently in operation in Hokkaido, with monthly projections incorporating the latest information, as well as an observatory and other laboratories where visitors can learn about the wonders of science while having fun.
The science museum also exhibits many Antarctic observation materials that are closely related to Wakkanai City, including large models of the icebreakers Soya, Fuji, and Shirase, a dog sled actually used for Antarctic observation, Antarctic rocks, and materials related to the Karafuto dogs Taro and Giro.
The aquarium was renovated in 2014, and now shares the same entrance as the Noshup Cold Current Aquarium, making it easier for visitors to enjoy.
In addition, the nickname "Wakkarimu" was announced in July, 2018 (Heisei 30).
