SPOT
Makomanai Takino Cemetery / Hill of the Buddha
Overview
Makomanai Takino Cemetery, located in Minami-ku, Sapporo, is one of Sapporo's most popular spots, combining art and nature while also being a place for visiting graves. The 'Hill of the Buddha,' designed by world-renowned architect Tadao Ando, is captivating for its unique landscape where only the head of the Great Buddha peeks out from a lavender hill. Beyond a tunnel, a solemn space unfolds where the 13.5-meter-tall Great Buddha stands. Giant Moai statues and a Stonehenge replica are also scattered throughout the grounds. From July 2026, an online advance payment system has been introduced, allowing for smooth viewing without waiting in line.
