The ropeway, which opened in December 1979, is a three-track alternating system with a capacity of 30 people, and travels the 735m from the base to the summit in about four minutes. The view from the ropeway windows is a miniature garden of the city below during the day, Otaru Port and Ishikari Bay, and on clear days you can see the distant Shokanbetsu mountain range and Shakotan Peninsula, and at night you can see the beautiful jewel-studded night view of Otaru, which is said to be one of the "Three Great Night Views of Hokkaido." The Otaru Tenguyama Ropeway will operate from 6am on New Year's Day. You can watch the first sunrise from the mountaintop observation deck and make your first visit of the year at Tenguyama Shrine, located at the highest point in Otaru.
