SPOT
The ropeway, which opened in December 1979, is a three-track alternating system with a capacity of 30 people, and travels the 735m from the base of the mountain to the summit in about five minutes. During the day, you can see the city unfolding like a miniature garden below, Otaru Port and Ishikari Bay, and on clear days you can see the distant Shokanbetsu mountain range and Shakotan Peninsula. At night, you can see the beautiful jewel-studded night view of Otaru, which is said to be one of the "Three Great Night Views of Hokkaido." The view from the Tenguyama Ropeway will make your visit to Otaru even more memorable.
The Otaru Tenguyama Ropeway will operate from 6:00 AM on New Year's Day. You can watch the first sunrise of the year from the mountaintop observation deck and then make your first visit of the year to Tenguyama Shrine, the highest point in Otaru. Before sunrise, you can enjoy the "morning night view" floating in the clear air and silence. (The New Year's Day First Sunrise Event will not be held on January 1, 2026.)
We will also be selling lucky bags and distributing zodiac goshuin stamps during the New Year period. Please come and spend the New Year period at Otaru Tenguyama.
In winter, it transforms into the closest ski resort to downtown Otaru, offering a wide range of courses from beginner to advanced, and is also used by elementary and junior high school students in the city for ski lessons. From the slopes, you can look down on Otaru city and enjoy the expansive view of the ocean.
