Nijukken Road Cherry Blossom Avenue
Enjoy the arrival of spring while viewing the blooming cherry blossom petals. Nijukken Road Cherry Blossom Avenue, Japan's number one cherry blossom-lined road. Over a period of three years starting from 1916 (Taisho 5), Ezo mountain cherry trees and others were transplanted from the nearby mountains. At that time, the road was named Nijukken Road because the width between the left and right sides was exactly 'nijukken' (approximately 36 meters).
Nijukken Road is where over 2,000 cherry trees bloom magnificently along a 7-kilometer straight line. It is said to have started when cherry trees were planted as an imperial visit road for the royal family to inspect the Imperial Household Agency's Goryo Ranch, which was once located here.
Currently, it is selected as one of the '100 Best Roads in Japan,' '100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots,' and a 'Hokkaido Heritage' site. It is beloved by many as one of Japan's foremost cherry blossom viewing spots, and every year in early May, visitors come from all over the country to see Japan's number one cherry blossom avenue in its splendid full bloom.
