Nijuma Road Cherry Blossom Lined Trees
Watch the petals of cherry trees in bloom and enjoy the arrival of spring. Nijuma Road Cherry Blossom Lined Trees is the largest row of cherry trees in Japan. It took three years from 1916 to transplant Ezo-yamazakura and other cherry trees from the neighboring mountains. The road was called "Nijuken Road" because the width of the road on both sides was exactly 20 ken (about 36 meters) at that time.
More than 2,000 cherry trees bloom along the 7-kilometer stretch of Nijuken Road. It is said that the road was originally planted with cherry trees as a route for the Imperial Family to visit the Imperial Ranch of the Ministry of the Imperial Household in this area.
Today, the road has been selected as one of the "100 Best Cherry Blossom Roads in Japan," one of the "100 Best Cherry Blossom Spots," and a "Hokkaido Heritage Site," and is one of the most popular cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan. The beauty of the cherry blossoms blooming amidst the greenery of the surrounding pastureland is breathtaking.
