Potato Road Farmers' Market
A farmers' market where fresh vegetables are sold at low prices
The Potato Road Farmers' Market is located in the middle of the "Potato Road" that connects Hamakoshimizu with the central city center.
Every year, on odd-numbered afternoons from mid-June to November 3, when the planting season is over, nearby farmers bring in their produce and sell them at the low price of 100 yen per bag.
Mr. Minami, the representative farmer, started the direct-sale center with his friends more than 30 years ago. He saw carrots and potatoes that were being thrown away in the fields because of their size or shape, and he decided to make the best use of them.
In the past, they sold the vegetables every day instead of every other day, but it sometimes required manpower and leftovers caused the freshness of the vegetables to deteriorate. As a countermeasure, they switched to selling vegetables every other day in 2018, and as a result, the turnover of vegetables has improved and fresh vegetables are always available in the store.
The vegetables sold vary greatly depending on the time of year, but they include tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, leafy greens such as Chinese cabbage, cabbage, and spinach, and root vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, and burdocks. The fresh and tasty vegetables can be purchased at low prices, and are popular not only among local customers, but also among tourists and residents of nearby areas.
At 100 yen per bag, the farm does not make a lot of money, but Minami and his staff continue to sell their produce in response to customers' requests that they continue to do so.
We hope you will purchase the delicious vegetables grown in the beautiful scenery of the Potato Road.
