Ruins of Hiishikan

Ishizaki is the ancient name of Hiishi. There is a cape protruding from the southern end of the mouth of the Ishizaki River (Hayakawa River), which bisects the village of Ishizaki, where a shrine and a lighthouse stand. On top of this cape are the ruins of Hiishikan.
This pavilion was built in 1441 by Shigemasa Atsutani, a member of Hatakeyama Shigetada's family, who came from Tanabe in Shimokita. The pavilion fell during the Battle of Koshamain in 1457, and Shigemasa, who died in battle, drowned himself in the swift current below the pavilion, transformed himself into a giant shark, and became the master of the Hayakawa River.
His descendants served the Matsumae clan for generations as middle-ranking officials. The shrine called Tate-jinja enshrines the deity Kyotsu-no-kami, who is the guardian deity of Hiishi-kan and the same deity as that of Katori-jinja.
