Mount Moiwa / Sapporo Mount Moiwa Ropeway

Located almost in the center of Sapporo, Mt. Moiwa is 531m above sea level. From the summit, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Sapporo city, Ishikari Bay on the Sea of Japan, and Mashike-Shokanbetsu-dake. From the base to the middle of the mountain, you can take the ropeway or the Mt. Moiwa Tourist Expressway, and from the middle of the mountain to the summit, you can ride the Moris Car, a mini cable car that uses the world's first driving system. It is popular among Sapporo residents as an easy mountain to climb, and there are five hiking trails (the shortest is 2.4km, the longest is 4.5km) that can be climbed in light clothing, and it is crowded with climbers on summer weekends. It is a must-see place not only during the day but also if you want to see the night view of Sapporo.

In the Ainu language, it is called "Inkarshipe" (the place where one always goes up to keep watch), and it became a mountain to be watched over. Matsuura Takeshiro, an explorer from the end of the Edo period, wrote in his "Kouyo Yotei Nisshi" (Diary of the Rear Yotei), "For the Ainu, Mt. Moiwa was not only a lookout mountain, but also a sacred mountain of the gods."

In October 2015, Sapporo was recognized as one of the "New Top Three Night View Cities in Japan" along with Nagasaki and Kobe at the "Night View Summit," which brings together local governments and companies that are working to revitalize night view tourism across Japan. The mountaintop observation deck is a spectacular spot where you can see the city lights of Sapporo, which look like jewels scattered across the 360-degree Ishikari Plain. If you're a couple, why not ring the "Bell of Happiness" and leave a love padlock with your feelings written on it on the railing? Love padlocks are sold at the souvenir shop "Mt. MOIWA SOUVENIR SHOP" at Moiwa Chufuku Station and at the restaurant "The Jewels" at the mountaintop station. The moon viewed from the observation deck is also beautiful, so the spot has been recognized as one of the "100 Most Beautiful Moons in Japan."
