A town of stunning Lake Saroma views and Japan's finest scallops

Population:4,600
Saroma Town is a nature-rich town located roughly in the center of the Okhotsk Subprefecture in Hokkaido, with its entire northern area facing the beautiful Lake Saroma. The place name originates from an Ainu word meaning "a place where reeds grow." The Lake Saroma Observatory on Mt. Horoiwa within the town is the only spot offering a panoramic view of the vast lake, creating magnificent and majestic scenery in every season.
In terms of its natural environment, it boasts some of the longest hours of sunshine in Japan and is blessed by nature with significant temperature differences between day and night. Agriculture thrives by taking advantage of this climate, with specialty products like pumpkins, as well as wheat and beets, being shipped nationwide. It is also a vast dairy farming region where the number of cattle exceeds the human population, with idyllic landscapes reminiscent of Europe. In forestry, efforts are being made to protect the rich forests under the slogan, "Forests cannot be imported."
In the fishing industry, which has the two "seas" of Lake Saroma and the Sea of Okhotsk, the town was quick to shift to aquaculture. A rich variety of exquisite seafood is landed, including high-quality scallops that are also exported worldwide, as well as Hokkai shrimp and oysters. It is a charming town that lives in harmony with nature, where the rich bounty of the land and the finest marine products come together.
