A port town for enjoying the magnificent scenery shining at Cape Hinode and savoring hairy crabs and salmon nurtured by the sea of drift ice.

Population:4,000
Oumu Town is a lush port town with a population of about 4,500, located on the Sea of Okhotsk coast in northeastern Hokkaido. The name originates from the Ainu word 'Omu-i' (meaning 'the river mouth is blocked'), conveying the powerful natural workings of the Oumu River to the present day. Access is about a 50-minute drive from Okhotsk Monbetsu Airport and about an 80-minute drive from Nayoro Station. The town also offers its own airfare subsidy program for visitors from outside Hokkaido who use the airport and stay overnight in the town.
The climate is very cool in the summer, providing a comfortable environment to spend time as a summer retreat away from the hustle and bustle of the city. In winter, dynamic drift ice arrives on the coast from the Sea of Okhotsk, and a major attraction is being able to enjoy the rich, changing scenery throughout the four seasons. At 'Hinode Misaki' (Cape Hinode), a scenic spot that symbolizes the town, there is an observation deck, a hot spring, and a campground. The beauty of the magnificent sunrise over the horizon deeply soothes the hearts of visitors.
The primary industries are fishing and agriculture. The scallop and horsehair crab fishing that begins with the 'umiake' (the end of the sea ice season) in March, as well as the autumn brand salmon 'Yūhō' and 'Mejika,' are famous nationwide. In agriculture, special products include Angus cattle raised on vast pastures, high-quality milk, and Tartary buckwheat. It is a charming town where you can encounter luxurious food and beautiful, spectacular scenery.
