Sapporo City

The Sosegawa River runs north to south through the center of Sapporo. Sosegawa Park was built along the Sosegawa River. The beautifully maintained park is actually a good spot for a leisurely stroll. The lilacs and lily of the valley are at their best now!

Sosegawa Park was created on both banks of the Sosegawa River between Kita 1-jo and Minami 4-jo near the TV Tower. The park stretches 820 meters from north to south, and although there is a busy road next to the park, walking in Sosegawa Park, you may forget that you are in the middle of the city.

The well-maintained sidewalks make the park an ideal walking course, and the flowers and plants growing there soothe and delight the walkers, perhaps making them forget the hustle and bustle of the city.

In particular, there are 200 lilacs planted in 32 varieties, ranging from early to late bloomers, so visitors can enjoy the colorful lilacs and their unique fragrance over a long period of time. There are also 130 hashidoi, or Japanese tree lilacs, which are at their best in late June.

Sosegawa Park also has flowerbeds with a variety of plants and flowers, among them 35 beds of lily of the valley.

The variety is German lily of the valley, and the sight of its small bell-shaped white flowers blowing in the wind is quite lovely. The lily of the valley is at its best in June, when it can be enjoyed together with lilacs.

By the way, did you know that Sapporo's tree is the lilac and its flower is the lily of the valley? The name was decided by a vote of Sapporo citizens in 1960.

The fact that two of Sapporo's representative plants can be seen at the same time in the center of the city is once again surprising us with the attractiveness of Sosegawa Park.
