A walk along the "Purple Road" in Higashi Ward, Sapporo, where purple wisteria blooms in full glory
Did you know that there is a road called the "Purple Road" in Higashi-ku, Sapporo? Moreover, the length of this Purple Road is more than 6km. I went to find out what kind of road the Purple Road is. When we actually went there, we quickly found out that the Purple Road was a promenade lined with many wisteria trellises. It was called the Purple Road because it was a road lined with purple wisteria in full bloom.
The Purple Road runs north along Fushiko-Takuhoku-dori. The starting point is where Fushiko-Takuhoku-dori and Kanjo-dori cross, close to Fushiko Park. Look for the sign that says "Start."
Of the more than 6 km long Purple Road, about 1.8 km up to the Sapporo Municipal Sapporo Junior High School area has been developed as a promenade.
There are 41 wisteria trellises along the walkway. The reason so many wisteria were planted here is because the Fushiko area was called "Fujiko" in ancient times.
In addition to wisteria, Purple Road is also planted with birch, Japanese elm, poplar, ginkgo, azalea, lilac, and Puerto Rico spruce. The surrounding area is a fairly busy road, but this place feels like it's cut out from the rest, which is a bit strange.
The best time to see wisteria in Sapporo is from late May to early June. If you walk along Purple Road during this season, you will understand why it got its name. The wisteria trellises overflowing with flowers create a veritable purple tunnel, gently painting the view of those walking along the road.
If you make a U-turn where the promenade ends, you'll find that it's just the right length for a walk. The wisteria season for this year (2022) is coming to an end, but even if the wisteria isn't blooming, this is still a pleasant place to visit. *We also have a video of us strolling down Purple Road, so please check it out if you're interested! Why don't you try walking there too?
