You can see a large group of Marimo at Lake Akan! But what are "Marimo"? [Dropkick on My Devil x Mame Anime Collaboration (11)]

There are only two episodes left of the popular collaboration between "Dropkick on My Devil x Mame Anime (Hokkaido Edition)" and Domingo! The theme of the 11th episode is "Marimo".

As shown in the video, it is well known that Marimo grow in Hokkaido. But what exactly are Marimo?

Marimo is a type of green algae that lives in water and belongs to the family Spirochetidae. It is classified as endangered, Class 1, which means it is at the highest risk of extinction.

They have been found not only in Hokkaido, but also in lakes and ponds in Honshu. However, Lake Akan is the only place where you can find large, spherical marimo growing in colonies! Lake Akan is the only place in Japan that has all the environmental factors necessary for marimo to grow.

The Marimo Exhibition and Observation Center on Churui Island is a facility where you can learn more about the ecology of Marimo. You can get there by sightseeing boat or high-speed boat.

Inside the facility, there is a large aquarium that recreates the bottom of Lake Akan, where you can take your time to observe the natural marimo. As mentioned in the anime, sometimes you can come across marimo that are surprisingly large.

Marimo were designated as a national natural monument in 1921 (Taisho 10), and as a special national natural monument in 1952 (Showa 27). The more you look at them, the more mysterious their ecology becomes. Come and see for yourself at the Marimo Exhibition and Observation Center. It's sure to be a valuable experience!
