See Marimo Colonies at Lake Akan! But What Exactly Are These Mysterious Moss Balls? [Dropkick on My Devil! X Mame Anime Collab (11)]

Our popular collaboration企画 with "Dropkick on My Devil! X Mame Anime (Hokkaido Arc)" and Domingo is down to its last two episodes! The theme for the 11th installment is "Marimo."

As mentioned in the video, it's well-known that marimo grow in Hokkaido. But what exactly are they?

Marimo is a type of green algae that lives in water and belongs to the Pithophoraceae family. It is classified as Critically Endangered, meaning it faces the highest risk of extinction.

They have been found in lakes on Japan's main island of Honshu as well, but Lake Akan is the only place where large, spherical marimo grow in colonies! In fact, Lake Akan is the only place in Japan that possesses all the environmental factors necessary for marimo to thrive.

The Marimo Exhibition and Observation Center on Chuurui Island is a facility where you can learn about the detailed ecology of marimo. You can visit it by taking a sightseeing boat or a high-speed boat.

Inside the facility, there is a large tank that reproduces the bottom of Lake Akan, allowing you to observe natural marimo up close. As mentioned in the anime, you might even encounter some surprisingly large marimo.

Designated as a Natural Monument of Japan in 1921 and a Special Natural Monument in 1952, the marimo is a truly fascinating organism. Be sure to visit the Marimo Exhibition and Observation Center to see their mysterious ecology for yourself. It's sure to be a precious experience!
