On September 13, 2023, 'sun', which had been operating as a pop-up in a corner of a building in Obihiro, had its much-anticipated reopening in the same location. Run by Ai, a true cafe enthusiast, it has become a cozy little cafe with a gentle, comfortable atmosphere. Its specialty hand-drip coffee and sweets are quickly gaining popularity.

Open the door to a charming space with original merchandise and more

sun originally started as a pop-up in an izakaya (Japanese pub), but it quickly gained fans thanks to its flavors and the owner's warm personality. When the izakaya moved, Ai decided to take over the space and run sun as her own cafe. The interior was renovated with a white-based theme, including the walls and shelves, to create a more cafe-like atmosphere for its grand reopening.

There are a total of four two-person tables

The cafe is on the second floor of the building. When you open the door, a bell jingles, and the owner, Ai, greets you with a gentle, "Hello! Are you dining in?" It's a small shop with three counter seats and four tables, offering both dine-in and takeout. Relaxing BGM plays in the background, making you feel like time is slowing down. If it's not crowded, you're welcome to do remote work or read a book.

Ai, who has always loved visiting cafes, creates exquisite sweets that are all crafted with care. The regular menu features three items: "Classic Pudding" (500 yen), "Basque Cheesecake" (550 yen), and "Chocolate Fudge Brownie" (380 yen). There are also daily specials like scones and cookies. Everything looks so delicious, it's hard to choose just one!

While everything is delicious, the "Chocolate Fudge Brownie" is a must-try! The moist brownie is filled with crunchy chocolate chips. It has a hint of saltiness that makes it even more appealing. It pairs perfectly with a latte or coffee. When you dine in, it's served with a side of whipped cream, which is an irresistible touch.

The cafe also has collaboration days with "oyatsu no jikan," a sweets maker without a physical shop. The next ones are scheduled for May 2, 15, and 31. Their carrot cake and Victoria sponge cake are so popular that people sometimes line up in the morning.

The coffee served at sun is sourced from two different coffee shops. The dark and medium roasts use the "sun blend," an original blend from "may coffee" in Nakasatsunai. It's a well-balanced blend based on beans from Papua New Guinea, Guatemala, and Peru.

Coffee beans are also for sale (900 yen for 100g), so you can brew delicious coffee at home

The light roast is the "Ethiopia Yirgacheffe" from "ALCHEMIST COFFEE," a roastery in Sapporo's Miyanomori district, known for its fruity notes. Ai is old friends with the roaster and owner, and she had long dreamed of using his coffee when she opened her own shop.

For drinks with milk at sun, you can switch to oat milk for an additional 100 yen

You can enjoy three types of drip coffee: the light roast from "ALCHEMIST COFFEE" and the medium and dark roasts from "may coffee."
