Obihiro City

When you think of Hokkaido cuisine, many dishes come to mind, and recently, butadon (pork rice bowl) has firmly established itself on that list. Butadon is a specialty of Obihiro, a city with many popular restaurants. Here, we'd like to introduce you to one of them: Butadon no Tonta. The restaurant started as a butcher shop before specializing in butadon, so you know it's going to be good.

With high expectations, I stepped inside!

First-time visitors to Tonta will likely find themselves pondering the menu. That's because the basic butadon comes in three varieties: "Loin Butadon," "Pork Belly Butadon," and "Fillet Butadon." What's more, they are all priced at 790 yen (tax included). Regulars may know their favorite cut by heart, but it can be a tough choice if you're new.

In that case, we recommend the "Loin & Pork Belly Combo Bowl" for 940 yen (tax included).
It's a truly luxurious dish that lets you enjoy both loin and pork belly. It was originally created as a special item in response to customer requests, but it became so popular that it was promoted (?) to the regular menu.

By the way, as you can see from the photo, all of Tonta's butadon bowls come with miso soup and pickles. Another key feature is the pot of sauce that comes with your meal. What a treat to be able to pour as much of Tonta's signature sweet sauce as you like!
Having started as a butcher shop, Tonta prepares all its fresh Tokachi pork by hand. They sometimes use up to 100 kg of pork in a single day, all of which is hand-prepared the day before. It's hard to imagine the amount of work involved, but it seems the founder's philosophy, "Don't just sell butadon, sell the time and effort that goes into it," is still very much alive among the staff today.
This dedication to the meat is what makes Tonta's butadon so delicious. The restaurant moved to its current location in 2017 simply because the old one became too small to accommodate its many customers. It just goes to show that customers really can spot quality.

It's a simple dish, but that's precisely why the immense care and effort put into it shines through. This is a renowned butadon restaurant that will have you thinking, "I want to come back again," the moment you finish your meal.
