In this second installment of our month-long collaboration project, we will be visiting the town of Memuro for four weeks to provide you with information on how to enjoy the town and its specialties.

Now that the rainy season in Ezo has ended, summer is in full swing with strong sunshine. Many of you may be enjoying outdoor barbecues on your days off. At a barbecue, where you can enjoy the taste of the ingredients themselves, such as meat, vegetables, and seafood, you want to have a selection of delicious foods that you are particular about.

In this issue, we will introduce you to Memuro Town, which supports Japan's food industry with its proud and dedicated agriculture.

What kind of town is Memuro Town?

Located in the center of the Tokachi Plain, just below the center of Hokkaido and nestled in the bosom of nature with the beautiful Hidaka Mountains in the background, is the town of Memuro.
The population is about 18,500 and the area is about 513㎢. More than 41% (241㎢) of the town's land area is farmland, with agriculture as the main industry.

The fertile land and favorable climatic conditions have resulted in the production of many crops such as sweet corn, potatoes, and yams, which are among the most productive crops in Hokkaido.
Taking advantage of its location, the city also has a thriving food manufacturing industry that makes use of the abundant local resources such as agricultural products.

The town of Brimuro is adjacent to Obihiro City, where Tokachi Obihiro Airport is located, making it easy to access by air.
It takes about 35 minutes by car from Tokachi Obihiro Airport to the town of Blastmuro (starting point: Blastmuro Town Hall), or about 140 minutes by JR + bus.

In addition, access from land is relatively convenient as the JR Nemuro Main Line and the expressways, Doto Expressway and Obihiro-Hiroo Expressway, run through the town.
Using the expressway, the location can be reached in about 3 hours from Sapporo, Asahikawa, Kushiro, and other cities.

2. a town of flourishing agriculture

As mentioned earlier, about 41% of the total area of the town is farmland. The average of all 179 cities, towns, and villages in Hokkaido is 11%, which is about four times larger than the average of all cities, towns, and villages in Hokkaido.

The area of arable land per farmer is as large as 35.1 ha! This is an astonishing figure, as one farmer manages an area equivalent to about 7.5 Tokyo Domes.
The four major crops grown in the town of Brimuro are wheat, sugar beets, potatoes, and beans, known as "Tokachi's Four Field Crops. In addition to these, farmers grow a variety of vegetables such as tomatoes, green peppers, bracken, and asparagus.

One of the charms of this area is that the landscape of the town changes every year due to crop rotation (*2) to prevent crop failure (*1).
The Hidaka Mountains in the background, the clear blue skies of Tokachi as far as the eye can see, and the beautiful scenery created by the vast fields are the treasures of the town of Memuro.

(*1) Growing the same crop in the same place every year causes a bias in the composition of the soil, resulting in poor growth of vegetables.
