Jurian in Ebetsu: 6 Creative Japanese & Western Sweets Loved by Locals for Over 50 Years!

In Ebetsu City, there is a Japanese and Western-style confectionery shop that almost every local has visited at least once. It's called "Jurian," and it was founded in 1968. What makes Jurian special is its incredibly wide variety of products and the delightful, free-spirited fusion of Japanese and Western styles. Let's take a closer look to see what that's all about.

It's a renowned shop, located about a 5-minute walk from JR Nopporo Station. It moved to its current location in 1973 and has been cherished by the community ever since.
As you step inside, you're greeted by a truly vast array of sweets. How could anyone possibly choose without a little hesitation? What's more, there are many unique treats that you can only find at Jurian.
This time, to help you with your shopping, we'll introduce some of our recommended products. First up is this!
Ebetsu City is known as the "city of bricks" for its brick manufacturing that dates back to the Meiji era. That's how "Nopporo's Famous Sweet: Renga Monogatari (Brick Story)" was born. The dough, with a color reminiscent of bricks, is surprisingly a blend of wheat and buckwheat flour. It's a perfect match with the white bean and sesame paste filling.
The "Local Specialty: Juri," named after the shop itself, is also intriguing. At first glance, it looks like a Western boussé cake, but one bite will surprise you! The filling isn't cream, but white bean paste (shiro-an). It's a surprisingly perfect match...
We also recommend "Nopporo-shi," which became a hot topic with people saying, "Hokkaido has its own Shingen Mochi!" You pour the brown sugar syrup (kuromitsu) from the small packet over it before eating. It's generously coated with roasted soybean flour (kogashi kinako) from Hokkaido, creating a flavor that everyone is sure to love.
Let's introduce a rather unique item here: "Ebetsu Specialty: Yatsume Tengoku (Lamprey Paradise)." The name is quite bold, and the packaging featuring a lamprey is cute! It's a pie pastry with a buttery bean paste filling that is crispy and crumbly.
Now, let's introduce the most popular item. It's the "Torokeru Chocolat (Melting Chocolate)," which needs to be refrigerated. You can tell it's delicious just by looking at it. The soft, crumbly sponge and the rich chocolate cream with a texture like ganache... once you taste it, you'll understand why it's the number one favorite.
Quickly catching up in popularity to the "Torokeru Chocolat" is the "Rakuno Cheesecake (Dairy Cheesecake)." It's rich but not overpowering, so even people who aren't fond of cheese can enjoy it. ...As we've rushed through these introductions, have you noticed that many of Jurian's products are individually wrapped?

This means they are perfect for souvenirs and easy to share with others! There's a huge variety, so take your time and enjoy the delightful dilemma of choosing when you visit.
