SPOT
Horotachi National Ski Resort
Located at 44 degrees north latitude, this is the coldest place in Japan at -41.2℃. With its blessed natural environment and steep slopes that are great for skiing, this ski resort is popular with advanced skiers too. The snow is soft and fluffy, with very little moisture due to the freeze-ups at night. It is one of the snowiest areas in Hokkaido, so the amount of snowfall is ample.
There are four courses, from beginner (maximum slope 18 degrees) to advanced. The slopes, which have ungroomed sections on each course, including the Horotachi course (maximum slope 44 degrees) for advanced skiers, are a powder freak's paradise. Because it is a local ski resort that is not crowded, you can ski to your heart's content.
