SPOT
Horotachi National Ski Resort
Located at 44 degrees north latitude, this is the coldest place in Japan at -41.2°C. With a blessed natural environment and steep slopes that are challenging to ski on, this ski resort is popular with advanced skiers. The snow is soft and fluffy, with almost no moisture due to the freezing temperatures at night. As it is one of the snowiest areas in Hokkaido, the amount of snowfall is ample.
There are four courses ranging from beginner (maximum slope of 18 degrees) to advanced. The slopes, which have ungroomed sections on each course, including the Horotachi course (maximum slope of 44 degrees) for advanced skiers, are a powder freak's paradise. As it is a local ski resort that is uncrowded, you can ski to your heart's content.
