Heiwa-dori Shopping Park
Heiwa-dori Shopping Park is the first 'permanent pedestrian-only road (year-round pedestrian paradise)' built in Japan.
This main street, which runs straight north from JR Asahikawa Station, a transportation hub, attracted attention from all over Japan in 1972 (Showa 47) as the first attempt of its kind in the country. Formerly called Shidan-dori, its name later changed to Heiwa-dori and then to Heiwa-dori Shopping Park, and it has been cherished by many citizens as Asahikawa's main street.
Both sides of the street are lined with a variety of stores, from department stores and specialty shops to beauty salons and ramen restaurants, and it is visited by many citizens and tourists as a shopping zone and gathering place. In 2002, the entire street was renovated and transformed. Along the street, there are fountains and bronze sculptures, including 'Young Woman' by Churyo Sato, as well as benches perfect for taking a break, making it a street that can be enjoyed from a cultural and artistic perspective.
