The great nature where May Queen potatoes grow, and a wonderful, depopulated town challenging the future.

Population:3,300
Assabu Town is a peaceful town with a population of about 4,100, located in the Donan/Hiyama region of Hokkaido. With a topography rich in nature, where about 82% of its total area is covered by lush mountain forests, it boasts excellent accessibility, being about a one-hour drive from Hakodate City and about forty minutes from the Hokkaido Shinkansen's Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station.
Blessed with the mild climate of southern Hokkaido and abundant nature, this area proactively addresses regional challenges. In 2009, it established the "Basic Ordinance for Creating a Wonderful Depopulated Town," and through generous childcare support and the development of the "Chotto Kurashi" (A Little Life) trial immigration facility, it is building a unique culture full of vitality where everyone can live with peace of mind.
Its key industries are agriculture and forestry, and it is particularly famous nationwide as the "birthplace of the May Queen potato." In addition to a popular event for making a giant jumbo croquette, in recent years, the town has been successively taking on the challenge of cultivating new crops such as sweet potatoes, popcorn corn, and asparagus aimed for year-round harvesting. Furthermore, the production of "Kitazato," an authentic shochu made from locally grown potatoes and May Queen potatoes, is also thriving. It is a charming region where exquisite food that condenses the blessings of the earth coexists with the warm vitality of its residents.
