This is the site of a military encampment that the shogunate ordered the Matsumae clan to build to strengthen the defense of Ezochi (present-day Hokkaido) following the opening of Hakodate Port. The area has been developed as a historical park, and you can stroll through the main enclosure, which retains its original appearance, and enjoy the changing scenery throughout the seasons.

Ryuunin Temple is the only temple that survived the fires of the Boshin War in Hakodate. In its precincts stands a famous cherry tree called "Ezo Kasumizakura." While Kasumizakura (haze cherry) trees are found throughout Japan, due to its historical context, Dr. Misao Tatewaki, a botanist and former professor at Hokkaido University, named the Kasumizakura in the grounds of Ryuunin Temple "Ezo Kasumizakura."

Kozenji Temple is said to have received its mountain name and priestly robes from Emperor Go-Mizunoo. The "Kechimyaku-zakura" (Bloodline Cherry Tree) in its grounds is a famous Naden cherry tree with a legend about the spirit of a cherry tree. This ancient tree, estimated to be over 300 years old, is the parent tree of the Naden variety, which is representative of Matsumae's cherry blossoms.
