3 Kokutaiji Temple (Atsugishi-cho): Cherry trees over 180 years old that have carved a history together with the temple
Kunitaiji, the oldest temple in East Hokkaido, is nestled in Cape Barasan. The precincts of Kokutaiji are one of the most famous cherry blossom viewing spots in Hokkaido, and one of the most beautiful cherry trees is an old cherry tree with dark-colored blossoms. The tree is over 180 years old, and its Japanese name is Oyama-zakura, meaning "mountain cherry tree." It is about 10 meters tall, with a trunk circumference of about 3 meters, and long branches extending out in all directions.
