[2026 Edition] 5 Must-See Moss Phlox Spots! Don't Forget Hokkaido's Other Cherry Blossoms

When you think of cherry blossoms in Hokkaido, varieties like Ezo-yamazakura, Somei-yoshino, and Chishima-zakura might come to mind. But there's another kind of sakura you shouldn't forget: Shibazakura, or moss phlox. In this article, we'll introduce some of the best spots in Hokkaido to see these beautiful flowers.

Shibazakura, also known as Hanatsumekusa, shares the name "sakura" but is different from the cherry blossoms that bloom on trees. It's called shibazakura because it spreads like shiba (lawn) and blooms with flowers resembling sakura (cherry blossoms).

Enjoy both the tree-blooming cherry blossoms and the sprawling moss phlox during your spring visit to Hokkaido!
