Furusato Ginga Line Rikubetsu Railway Festival

About 1,500 fireworks will light up the night sky of Rikubetsu Town, and a special train will run, allowing you to enjoy the fireworks from inside a diesel railcar. EVENT 4 The 52nd Hidaka Jukon Festival & Sarugawa River Fireworks Display (Hidaka Town)

Hidaka Jukon Festival

The historic "Hidaka Jukon Festival" honors the trees of the forest with a legendary dragon as its guardian deity. The event features a market with delicious local products and stage performances of traditional arts. "Kuki" refers to the massive schools of herring that swarm to the coast to spawn. This festival is held to commemorate the old days when the village prospered from herring fishing. There are food corners where you can enjoy local seafood, and hands-on events like an "all-you-can-catch sea urchin and scallop" activity. The fireworks, viewed with Benten Island floating on the coast, are truly spectacular.

Started to commemorate the establishment of "Marine Day," the Hakodate Port Fireworks Display is now considered one of Hakodate's "three great fireworks displays" and is a popular event that heralds the arrival of summer. Abashiri Okhotsk Summer Festival

This is a community-driven event that enlivens summer in Abashiri, featuring the "Ryuhyo Odori" (Drift Ice Dance) where about 1,000 dancers participate in a pedestrian-only central shopping district, and a music parade. The finale is a spectacular fireworks display launched over the Abashiri River. About 12,000 fireworks, including 2-shaku (24-inch) shells, will brilliantly color the night sky and the Sea of Okhotsk.

Onuma Lake Water Festival

A traditional festival representing summer in Onuma, it began as a memorial service for those who drowned in the lake. The event bustles with stage performances and food stalls, and the "Toro Nagashi" (floating lantern ceremony), which anyone can participate in, is magical. The fireworks launched at the end of the festival reflect on the lake's surface like giant flowers blooming, creating a captivatingly beautiful sight.

Rankoshi Seseragi Festival

The "Rankoshi Seseragi Festival" is held along the clear Shiribetsu River. At the revived eve festival this year, you can enjoy a beer garden while listening to jazz, followed by a powerful fireworks display at night. Hakodate Port Festival

The "Hakodate Port Festival," representing summer in Hakodate, is the city's largest festival, bringing excitement to the entire area. On the first day, a five-part program of fireworks is launched from Midori no Shima, featuring wide starmines, powerful shaku-dama shells, set-piece fireworks, and underwater fireworks, all synchronized to music. On the second and third days, the "Wasshoi Hakodate" parade dances through the city, and anyone can join the famous "Ika Odori" (Squid Dance) on the spot. EVENT 56 Doshin Shuka-bi (Autumn Flower Fire) (Sapporo City)

About 18,000 fireworks, including beautiful starmines and creative designs, are synchronized with music and launched into the autumn night sky of Sapporo. The production by Yamazaki Fireworks Manufacturing, which has won awards like the Prime Minister's Award at national competitions, is also a highlight.

Lake Toya Long-Run Fireworks Festival

This lakeside fireworks display celebrates its 44th anniversary this year. Every night, the fireworks are launched from a boat that moves across the lake, so you can watch them from anywhere in the Lake Toya Onsen town area. Some hotels offer views from guest rooms or large public baths, and enjoying fireworks while soaking in a hot spring, a unique experience to Lake Toya Onsen, is a special treat.

■Dates: April 28 (Mon) - October 31 (Fri) from 8:45 PM for 20 minutes
*The event will be held rain or shine, but may be canceled in case of unstable wind direction or speed.

EVENT 58 Jigokudani Demon Fireworks (Noboribetsu City)

Jigokudani Demon Fireworks

This fireworks display is held at Jigokudani (Hell Valley), the source of Hokkaido's popular Noboribetsu Onsen. The sight of the "Yukijin" (guardian deities of the hot springs) who are said to reside in Hell Valley launching powerful demon fireworks into the night sky like a volcanic eruption is truly spectacular. The Tezutsu hanabi (hand-held fireworks), which pray for everyone's happiness and protection from misfortune, shoot up to a height of 8 meters in a stunning display that draws huge cheers from the crowd.

■Dates: Every Monday and Thursday in June / Every Thursday in July / Every Thursday in September, from 8:00 PM for about 20 minutes
■Fee: 500 yen *Free for elementary school students and younger
