Be Prepared! A Guide to Dressing for Winter in Hokkaido
Winter in Hokkaido feels completely different from mainland Japan, and sub-zero temperatures are the norm. A hat, gloves, scarf, and a heavy outer coat are essential for staying warm. When attending outdoor events, a warm knit hat and gloves are a must, as your ears and fingertips can become painfully cold. In extreme cold, it's also a good idea to protect your feet by wearing two pairs of socks.
Furthermore, snowy roads are much more slippery than they appear, and many inexperienced travelers fall. The "penguin walk"—taking small, shuffling steps—is an effective way to walk. While winter boots with non-slip soles are ideal, if you don't have any, temporary spikes that can be attached to your shoes are conveniently available at airports and convenience stores.
Prepare well in advance and have a wonderful time sightseeing in Hokkaido this winter!
