If you're planning on visiting Hokkaido in winter, check this out in advance! Be sure to take precautions against the cold.

Sapporo Snow Festival

The temperature in Hokkaido feels completely different from that in Honshu in winter, with temperatures below freezing being the norm. Hats, gloves, scarves, and thick outerwear are essential for protection from the cold. When participating in outdoor events, your ears and fingertips will get freezing cold, so a warm hat like a knit cap and gloves are also essential. In extremely cold weather, it's a good idea to take precautions for your feet, such as wearing two pairs of socks.

Additionally, snowy roads are more slippery than they look, and many travelers who are not used to it have fallen over. When walking, it is effective to take small steps, known as the "penguin walk." Ideally, winter boots with anti-slip soles are recommended, but if you don't have any, simple spikes, which can be purchased at airports or convenience stores, are convenient.

Be sure to prepare well in advance and enjoy your winter trip to Hokkaido!
