Check Before You Go! How to Prepare for Hokkaido's Winter and Stay Warm
The perceived temperature in Hokkaido's winter is completely different from that of mainland Japan, and sub-zero temperatures are the norm. A hat, gloves, scarf, and a thick outer jacket are essential for staying warm. When attending outdoor events, a warm knit hat and gloves are a must, as your ears and fingertips will feel freezing cold. In extreme cold, it's also a good idea to take measures for your feet, such as wearing two pairs of socks.
Furthermore, snowy roads are more slippery than they look, and many inexperienced travelers fall. When walking, it's effective to take small steps, known as the "penguin walk." Winter boots with non-slip soles are ideal, but if you don't have any, convenient attachable spikes can be purchased at airports and convenience stores.
Prepare well in advance and enjoy a wonderful winter tour of Hokkaido!
