Makomanai Shrine
The shrine is located on a hill with a great view in Kita Hiyama Ward. It dates back to the 26th year of Meiji (1893) when settlers erected a small shrine to pray for the safety of settlers in the dangerous land where bears were seen when they settled, and enshrined Oyamazumi-no-Okami and Kumano-no-Okami. The following year, in 1894 (the 27th year of the Tokushima Prefectural Government), a settler from Tokushima Prefecture invited the spirit of Omiya Hachiman Shrine in Fukui Village, Naga County, Awa Province, and enshrined it at the small shrine. In 1906 (Meiji 39), a new shrine was built and renamed "Makomanai Shrine" after the name of the place. In 1934, the shrine was relocated to the security forest in the city center, where a far shrine was built, and a new shrine building was erected at the present location. The shrine is not staffed by a priest, and those wishing to receive a red seal must call in advance. In addition to the "Tamagawa Shrine" in Tamagawa Park and the "Atsuta Shrine" in the Aichi area, which enshrines the spirit of the Atsuta Jingu Shrine, the "Aizu Byakkotai Tamagawa Haruyojo" was built by Goro Niwa, the founder of the Niwa area in the Tamagawa Park site, to worship the spirits of the 19 members of the boy Byakkotai.
