SPOT
Shiretoko Pass
The Shiretoko Transversal Highway crosses the World Heritage Site "Shiretoko", and this pass with its vast and beautiful scenery is located on the border between Rausu Town and Shari Town.
The pass is one of the harshest natural environments in Hokkaido, and is closed to traffic during the winter months (November through April) due to several meters of snowfall. The pass usually opens before Golden Week, but before it opens, a special "Shiretoko Snow Wall Walk" is held for one day, allowing visitors to walk along the roadway between high snow walls.
During the snow-free season, visitors can drive slowly along the winding road and enjoy the beautiful mountains and primeval forests of Quercus crispula and Abies sachalinensis, and on a clear day, they can even see as far as Kunashiri Island. If you are lucky, you may see wild animals that inhabit the World Natural Heritage site. Be careful of brown bears.
