Sapporo City

Located close to the Sapporo Factory, a commercial facility familiar to Sapporo residents, there is a Japanese-Western style cafe that will take you back in time. What kind of place is it?

Heading east from Sapporo Factory, you will arrive at the modern Western-style buildings of the Former Nagayama Takeshiro Residence and the Former Mitsubishi Mining Dormitory. These magnificent buildings are designated as tangible cultural properties by Hokkaido and registered as tangible cultural properties by the national government, respectively.

After taking off your shoes and entering the building, head towards the former Mitsubishi Mining Dormitory on your left, and you will soon see a sign and a door that is your destination!

This is "Japanese-Western Cafe Nagayama Rest," which is actually a coffee shop. When you open the door, you'll find a retro-modern space that feels somehow nostalgic, yet fresh.

Doesn't it feel a little special to be able to enjoy meals and tea in a building that is a tangible cultural property? We asked them to immediately tell us their recommended menu items.

First up is the "Nagayamatei Curry" (1,080 yen including tax). You can enjoy two types of curry: traditional pork curry and beef curry made with sauteed beef. It's no wonder it's the most popular menu item among both men and women. It's a mild curry that is not too spicy and you can tell it was made with care.

And the "Fruit Sandwich" (980 yen including tax) is a perfect fusion of Japanese and Western styles! You might think, "Isn't this just another fruit sandwich that's popular these days?", but the cream part is actually "anko cream" made from a mix of white bean paste and whipped cream. In addition to the fruit you can see on the cross section, it also contains warabi mochi, making it very filling!

The "Nagayama Parfait" (1,190 yen including tax) is a unique parfait that looks like it embodies a mix of Japanese and Western cuisine. It uses soft serve ice cream from Kitahiro Farm in Shintoku Town, and underneath it are layers of many ingredients, including matcha mousse, cherry blossom whipped cream, and Yumepirika granola. The taste and texture change with each bite, so you'll never get bored of it.

We also recommend colorful and refreshing sodas during the hot season. For an additional 220 yen, you can make a soft serve ice cream float like the one in the photo for an even more photogenic drink that will get you excited.

Instead of spending your lunch or tea time at your usual cafe, it's nice to experience the slow flow of time here. The extraordinary experience that can only be felt in this space is likely to give you the energy to return to your everyday routine.
