What is a 'Japanese-Western Style Cafe'?! A Special Time in a Modern Western-style Building in Sapporo

Near the well-known Sapporo Factory commercial complex, there's a place called a 'Japanese-Western Style Cafe' that lets you travel back in time. What kind of place could it be!?

Heading east from Sapporo Factory, you'll arrive at the Former Nagayama Takeshiro Residence and the Former Mitsubishi Mining Company Dormitory, where a modern Western-style building stands. These impressive buildings are designated as a Hokkaido Tangible Cultural Property and a National Registered Tangible Cultural Property, respectively.

After taking off your shoes and entering the building, head to the left towards the Former Mitsubishi Mining Company Dormitory, and you'll soon see the sign and door of our destination!

This is the 'Japanese-Western Style Cafe Nagayama Rest'—yes, it's a cafe. Opening the door reveals a retro-modern space that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly new.

Doesn't it feel special to enjoy a meal or tea inside a Tangible Cultural Property? We immediately asked for their recommended menu items.

First up is the 'Nagayama-tei Curry' (1,080 yen, tax included). You can savor two types of roux: a traditional pork curry and a beef curry lavishly topped with sautéed beef. It's no wonder this is the most popular dish among all customers. It's a mild, gentle curry that you can tell has been carefully prepared.

And the 'Fruit Sandwich' (980 yen, tax included) is a true example of Japanese-Western fusion! You might think, 'Isn't that just the trendy fruit sandwich?' But the cream is actually 'an-cream,' a mix of white bean paste (shiro-an) and whipped cream. In addition to the fruit you see in the cross-section, it also contains warabimochi (bracken-starch dumplings), making it surprisingly filling!

The 'Nagayama Parfait' (1,190 yen, tax included) is another unique creation whose appearance embodies the Japanese-Western fusion concept. It features soft-serve ice cream from Kita-hiro Farm in Shintoku Town, and underneath are many layers of ingredients like matcha mousse, sakura whipped cream, and Yumepirika granola. With each spoonful, the flavors and textures change, so it never gets boring.

In the warmer months, the colorful and refreshing sodas are also recommended. For an extra 220 yen, you can turn any of the various sodas like melon, strawberry, or summer mandarin (390 yen, tax included) into a soft-serve float like the one in the picture, making it even more photogenic and exciting.

Instead of your usual cafe for lunch or tea, why not savor the slow, relaxed flow of time here? The extraordinary atmosphere of this space is sure to give you the energy to return to your daily life.
